I discovered British mystery writer Ellis Peters at age 11, after I choose one of her books from a school book club flyer; many decades later she is still my favorite author. Best known for her Brother Cadfael mysteries, about an 11th Century monk/sleuth, she had a deft ability to draw a reader into whatever world she was describing, so that one could almost see the Abbey where the monks lived and worked, or travel with them to Wales on a quest. If you want meticulously researched historical novels which include a compelling plot, interesting and complex characterizations, a light touch of romance, and a world view that encompasses wisdom and compassion, look no further. And after you’ve made your way through all 20 of the Brother Cadfael chronicles, you’ll definitely want to seek out her other detective series, more contemporary but equally as good. Happy reading!
