E. L. Doctorow's novel Ragtime has been a consensus choice on lists of the greatest novels of the 20th century, and his long career as the author of twelve novels and other works of short fiction, essays, and stage drama has been multiply honored with awards such as the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award, and many more. Ragtime was also adapted for a triumphant film starring Elizabeth McGovern, Howard E. Rollins Jr., James Cagney, Mandy Patinkin, Mary Steenburgen and Norman Mailer and directed by Milos Forman. Mr. Doctorow died of complications from lung cancer in Manhattan on July 21, 2015.
