James Herriot is the pen name of James Alfred "Alf" Wight, an author who based many of his books (such as “All Creatures Great and Small”) on his experiences as a veterinary surgeon in Yorkshire, England. Much of his work is semi-autobiographical. His books span a profound economic transition affecting the work of vets. Early in his career, his “patients” were often farm animals, including draught horses; but as they were replaced by mechanics, like tractors, the focus of vets’ work became household pets. James Herriot was most interested the relationships between country folks and their animals.
