J. R. R. Tolkien’s full name was John Ronald Reuel Tolkien. He gleefully claimed that “Tolkien” was derived from the German word tollkühn, which means "foolhardy". His family had originally come from Germany to Britain, although Tolkien was born (1892) in the land that is now South Africa, where his father had been posted by the English bank he worked for. His father died when Tolkien was three and his mother when he was 12. He learned to read at age 4 and soon after to write. Today, as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, he is known as the father of modern fantasy literature.
