The historical novels and fantasy books by J. R. Tomlin are set in Scotland, where she spent a good deal of her youth as her father was Scottish. While there, her grandmother often read to her from the Scottish stories of the Bruce and the Good Sir James. She also explored the beautiful granite hills of the Cairngorms, which shine red during sunset. She is well traveled, having visited Europe, the Pacific Rim, and the US, where she now resides in Oregon.
