After 29 years of teaching high school English, Journalism, and TV Production in West Virginia and Georgia, Donna Meredith knew it was time to pursue a career path she'd detoured from when she began to teach. She returned to her early passion for writing, both as a freelancer and novelist.

Her latest book, "Wet Work," is a thriller set in north Florida, featuring hydrogeology student Summer Cassidy. Summer confronts a corrupt corporation that places profit over public safety. "Writing the novel gave me a chance to learn more about water issues," Donna says. "One of the joys of writing--and reading--for me is learning something new. I want my writing to make a difference, however small, in the world."

That means tackling issues like the challenge of balancing environmental and economic needs, women's issues, spousal abuse, race relations, and the need for better education in our country. Her novels have explored all these and more.

Donna's debut novel, "The Glass Madonna," is set in her hometown of Clarksburg, WV. The novel won first place for unpublished women's fiction from the Florida Writers Association in 2009 and runner-up in the Gulf Coast novel contest that same year.

A real glass figurine of the Madonna sits in Donna's bedroom today, though it wasn't made by any of her relatives. It does have a chip in the base. There was no family story about the figurine she inherited, but Donna thought it deserved one. While some of the places in the novel are real, like Twin Oaks restaurant, most are fictitious, such as Hillside High School and the Yellow Submarine bar. Those are part composite of various schools and bars, part imagination. In the 1950s and '60s, Clarksburg had dozens of glass factories. Some of the stories about factory workers contain elements of truth. Interviews uncovered the tale of the shoeless child who brought her daddy his lunch. The factory was short of workers that day.
