My bucket list includes: Walking the Camino de Santiago; cycling from London to Istanbul on my Dutch Bike; teaching English in Columbia; writing another 50 novels; raise a very large sum of money for Centrepoint, the London homeless young people charity; become fluent in Spanish; write a play and have it performed; and so much more.
My name is Jo Chumas (pronounced Choomarz); it's a Russian name and comes from my grandfather. I have lived all over the world but now live in my number one favourite city, Edinburgh, in Scotland. I was born in England in the 1960s but went to school in Europe.
I love cities but need daily doses of greenery to function. I write every day but walk every day too. My favourite walks are in wild places; forests, mountains, by the sea and far away from people. This is where I think deeply about my plots and stories. After all that fresh air, I feel okay about going back into my little study to write.
My study is actually a walk-in cupboard which I painted white to give it an illusion of space and light. I am surrounded by my books and that helps me think.
I adore antiquarian books and first editions and try to collect these when I can afford them.
I love animals but refuse to have a pet; the reason? I now live in an inner-city flat. The people who live in my city treat their pets well. I see many dogs on my walks and I love stopping to chat with them and their owners. If I lived in the countryside I would have a dog. My favourite dogs are Labradors. I love them. I also love cats but had to rehouse my last cat when I moved abroad for a while. I found her a farm where she could roam and be free. I still miss her.
I read first thing in the morning, as soon as I wake up and last thing at night, just before I go to sleep. I love coffee and I like cake too but these things are not related to waking up and going to sleep!
