David was born in Alaska, the tenth of fifteen children, where his father, Ralph, worked for the government, fished commercially, and wrote science fiction short-stories and novellas. A gifted writer (under the pen name Ralph WIlliams) Ralph was the posthumous runner-up for the prestigious Hugo Award in 1959. Ralph (and an older brother, Edgar) died at sea while on a commercial fishing trip, which resulted in a move back to his mother's home state of North Dakota
David volunteered for the draft in 1970 and was sent to Vietnam, where he served as a member of an elite Ranger reconnaissance team. He was the only survivor of a helicopter that was shot down while transporting his Ranger Team on a mission in the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone).
A graduate of the University of North Dakot with B.A, and M.A. degrees in Communications, he was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts degree program of the highly respected Iowa Writer's Workshop at the University of Iowa, but declined to attend because of family responsibilities.
David lives with his wife, Stephanie, in Rhode Island. He has one child, his son, Logn.
