I read all the time when I was a kid. As I grew older, I never stopped reading in a wide variety of genres. I loved speculative fiction, but that didn't stop me from reading the classics. I also had a real fondness for pulp fiction.
When I got to college, I took a graduate-level creative writing class with David Foster Wallace. He strongly encouraged me to keep at it.
It's been almost twenty years but I'm still at it!
