Anne Rivers Siddons began her writing career as a student journalist at her university in the deep South. After two of her articles in mild support of the civil rights movement garnered national attention, she was fired. She wrote in a number of genres and her fifth book Peachtree Road really took off. She could afford a house in the South and another in Maine. Although she does most of her writing in the South, she is quoted as saying about Maine, “It's like getting a gulp of clean air... I always feel in Maine like I'm walking on the surface of the earth. In the South, I always feel like I'm knee-deep."
