My books inhabit a secondary world: a version of France, at the time of its industrial revolution. The machines use steam, electricity – and magic. The main characters are misfits, outsiders because of their powers and their religion. My interest in history, together with my travels in Europe and Africa, inspire my stories about a family of shamans who journey not only to other worlds, but beyond death. "
