Australian author Hazel Buchanan was only five years old when she learned of the tragedy that would later form the basis for her debut novel. She grew up questioning why such a devastating event had occured and what the long term consequences would be. Longing for answers but unable to find out more, she ended up writing her own version of the story. The result is Surviving Anna.
Hazel lives in the mountains of northern New South Wales with her husband Gordon. They have three sons.
